Go Directly to Gaol (Jail)

This past Tuesday I spent over four hours waiting in a long, long queue outside what used to be the Provincial Prison of Carabanchel (in the Southwestern part of Madrid) where many prisoners on the losing side of the Spanish Civil War were held.  No, I wasn't waiting to buy tickets for a concert or anything like that.  I was waiting to hand in the required papers to renew my residency, which I have to do every five years.  Every time I have to go through this process I swear I'm going to apply for Spanish citizenship.  Now that I've put in my papers I have to go back and pick up my permit in 40 days.

In theory, they're going to start demolishing the prison in October to build more flats, a hospital and a school.  However, there are organizations and some of the political parties who are against the construction of the proposed new housing.  They want the prison to be converted into a type of civic centre and monument to those who suffered during the era of Franco.  A demonstration has been organized for the 27th though I doubt if it will make one bit of difference, because the decision has been made to build I think I heard over 700 flats.

Post Secret was WOW this week from beginning to end.  I saved about 5 postcards, including the one I'm posting with this.  I can't say that my dog is weird.  At least I've never caught her sleeping on the table or even on the table for that matter. She just doesn't like the rain and guess what?  I was getting ready to take her out earlier when it decided to start sheeting it down.
Luckily this time we didn't get any hail, but it is so dark and cool outside.  I was visitor number 182,215,259 today.

Well, I'd better see if I think Madam will go out and then decide what's for lunch.  Hope everybody has a good week.

  1. Four hours, ugh! At least it's only every five years. Oh you just reminded me to get to Post Secret today and check it out.
My cat is weird but that's to be expected lol. It's been cool here but sunny. The pollen is off the charts and it's making me even more miserable. Just some rain or a slight frost to knock it down a bit would be nice but I don't see that any of that in the near future.
It must be a pain to have to take the little Madam out according to the weather. LOL, she is so small I can't blame her for disliking the rain.
Have a great Sunday, I'll be watching the Ryder cup for a good part of the day.
    Hugs..

  2. The sun is out at the moment but this morning when I was going down to the bullring to see to see if I could see any of the tennis players from the Davis Cup, it was raining cats and dogs - not necessarily in that order. We have rain predicted for tomorrow too.

  3. I liked Post Secret today too. LOL Those dogs in the postcard do seem a little weird. My favorite was the girls that put their secrets on the bathroom wall, and left post its for others to do the same.
Our temps are going up again. The cool weather was so nice while it lasted.
So, you're hanging out at the jail these days? ~giggles~
Have a super week Brenda! I need to go out and buy a few groceries, if I can find a grocery store open. Wouldn't hurt if I did laundry too. Things are so out of whack around here, because so many places are still without power since Ike.

  5. Hey Brenda...I'm sure you told me this before, but how did you end up in Spain anyway? And what does it take to change your citizenship over there?

  6. I came for a year thanks to my Spanish professor at university and stayed. I worked in the same institute until it closed in 2004, which was sad because it was one of the first language institutes in Spain. Very few people in Madrid and other parts of Spain haven't heard of Briam Institute. I still teach but am freelance and getting ready to start a new course. I'm starting an exam preparation class tomorrow. As for the Spanish citizenship, which for me would be dual, I imagine a lot of papers and waiting in long queues.

  7. Long wait. I can never understand why some places can't get that together more.

My animals think the patio furniture is for them. If I would I am sure they would like a waitress to bring them something while on the lounge
