Good Start to a New Week

I just had to copy this postcard from one of my favourite sites - Post Secret. The message is simple and, best of all, easy to do, and I dedicate it to my dear friend Kath (angelcakes). She was nice to everyone.

Guess Who's in Town

May in Madrid is certainly a busy month -  what with two important holidays, bullfights every day, and now a herd of sheep crossing the city as I write this. I’ve found an interesting take on this event from Fox News. If you don’t have time to read the whole article, at least have a glance at the accompanying photo. You know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words. To get back to the sheep, this is a tradition that permits the use of Spanish paths during seasonal migration of the herds and Madrid lies right in the middle of two such routes, and it’s also to protest the loss of pasture land. The above photo was taken by a news agency (Juanjo Martín, efe) and shows the herd and the famous ‘Gate of Alcalá’. I’m going to leave the sheep to find greener pastures and head over to Post Secret. Have a good day.

Here are my contributions for Internet Day. If you haven’t seen this page, do so. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

And how about this quote from the then chairman of IBM, Thomas Watson, in 1943:

           “There’ll only be a world market for about five computers.”

Long live the WWW!

Holiday Today

San Isidro is the male Patron Saint of Madrid. His feast day is celebrated on the 15th of May with typical popular gatherings such as romerías (local festive pilgrimages), verbenas (fairs) and bullfights. The most important bullfights in Spain (and thus the world) take place in Madrid's Plaza de Las Ventas bullring at this time. Lasting more than 20 days, this series of fights held in Spain's premiere bullring attracts the best fighters and breeders, together with the most knowledgeable aficionados. If you want to see a bullfight, this is the time to go. Click here for more information about bullfights in Madrid. Copied from www.gomadrid.com (I corrected a couple of spelling mistakes).

Today is a holiday for us in Madrid – a day which traditionally brings rain, but for the last couple of years Saint Isidro hasn’t blessed us with rain. It’s partly cloudy today, however, rain isn’t in the forecast. What is in the forecast, of course, in the bullring near my house, is, I believe, the eighth of the San Isidro bullfights. I can hear the people outside who will be attending. Any moment now there will be a monumental traffic jam and our usually quiet neighbourhood will be filled with shouts and horns blaring. Then we’ll have quiet again for a while. Perhaps we’ll hear the occasional olé if the crowd is pleased, and afterwards noise again as the people come out filling the bars and streets. Me, I’m staying in at least until all the ‘bulls’ are in the ring.

If You're in Need of a Laugh

I've just been over to Y360 because I got an e-mail saying I had a message, which must have self-destructed since I couldn't find one or I couldn't find a recent one. Anyway, I did see that Matt Whatever-His-Name had written a blog entitled 'Update on 360 Transition and Timing', in which he mentions that the said transition will take place in the second half of 2008. Do you know one of my favourite sayings in English? It's: 'They couldn't arrange a piss-up * in a beer factory.' I'm presently using Yahoo as my junk mail address, but I'm seriously thinking of closing it. While I was there I read some of the comments (mostly negative) and this particular one caught my eye: 'I hope it works.'  Maybe it's my sense of humour, but those four words struck me as funny. I'm still chuckling!

* piss-up = vulgar expression for a heavy bout of drinking (dictionary.com)

Post Secret Sunday

Just had to post this. Today there are so many wonderful secrets that I had difficulty deciding which one to choose. In the end I chose two. One for now to put on here and the other for my personal file. There's one that was sent in by a nurse about the doctor she works for that had me ROTFL. Hope Post Secret wins the Webby Awards again. I left it until too late and voting has closed. Too bad because this page is some of the best medicine for lifting one's spirits and morale. I know at least one person out there who will agree, and I'm sure she's probably already seen this week's secrets too.

Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.
