The Right to Bare Arms

It's been a while since I've composed a blog about anything. These past couple of weeks have been busy ones, and I've only been on 'a ratos' a few minutes at a time. Nothing much has happened in my life though I'm going to write about something that almost did, and hopefully explain the title of this blog.

Last Saturday  I went food shopping at one of the supermarkets near my house that opens on Saturday afternoon. As soon as I entered I realised that there was something wrong, especially since one of the workers started putting the shutters down as if the shop wasn't quite open. What had happened is that they'd just been robbed and apparently the thief had left only seconds before I arrived, not that I saw anyone suspicious or anything. The police arrived almost immediately and from what I heard the thief had a black pistol, got away with not too much money (about 150 euros) and the poor shop girl wasn't sure if the thief was Spanish or not, which was logical because she was very upset. Wouldn't you be if someone were threatening you with a pistol that could have been a toy but you wouldn't really want to chance that it wasn't?  Anyway, I was surprised that we weren't asked to leave at least while the police were there. I did my shopping as quickly as possible and left. With all the unexpected excitement, I forgot one of the things I'd gone for, so I went out again this time to a multi-product shop.

Spain is nothing like the United States where lots of people have guns. I suppose if someone is a hunter then that person has permission to have a rifle.  I don't know any hunters though because I sure don't know anyone except the police (and some bad guys) who have weapons. In other words I don't know anyone personally who has permission to have a weapon be it pistol or elephant gun. Being permitted to bear arms is not part of the Spanish Constitution. I don't know what the spell check will say about the title of this post but the right to bare arms is something everyone can enjoy even if it's not specified in a Constitution.

  1. My husband thinks if everyone carried guns, there would be less crime. Not sure I agree with him, but it might make someone think twice before committing a crime! Hubby is back to working the night shift (it changes every 3 months) and I am a little nervous staying in the new neighborhood alone. This subject has been on my mind lately. ((HUGS))

  2. My husband hunted and fished, but never when our freezer had enough to eat.
He also was a policeman, and was a firearms instructor. I gave all his guns to friends and family who were mostly in law enforcement, only a nephew was not in law enforcement, but he is a hunter.

If everyone carried a gun, then everyone would just shoot each other. An old aquaintenance shot a man trying to rob the store she worked at. She was terrified he would try to kill her before court time. While on bond, he broke into a residence, and the resident shot and killed the robber. He never made it to court for the store robbery.

  3. Yes, something similar to this happened to an acquaintance of mine. She did have a licence to carry a pistol because she had a jeweller's. A couple of men tried to rob the shop one day. She point blank shot him in the stomach, expecting him to fall like in the movies. He did something quite differently. He took the pistol away from her and hit her over the head, giving her a bad concussion. They weren't very clever because they searched the male shop assistant, but not her. Luckily for her, the one she shot died in prison of drug-related causes. Still, I don't know anyone who carries as I know longer see this woman and she no longer has a shop. Guns are definitely not the solution.

  5. Lucky that you didn't arrive sooner, who knows what may have happened?! Good grief how frightening. I shudder to think what could've happened had you interrupted the robbery!
I have an uncle who is a champion with guns especially shooting black powder. He is well into his 80's and has always hunted; the complete outdoorsman and nature lover. When I was a kid there would always be dead deer waiting to be skinned, etc. He told me that firing black powder was quite an art as one had to be totally accurate to make a clean kill and not have the animal suffer. I can only imagine those that don't possess that skill butchering one. He always ate what he hunted and did shoot for sport as well. I fired a weapon and although thrilling, the feeling of power and force is both scary and powerful. I could never own one nor would I want one anywhere near me. I had a female Karate teacher who had a gun pointed at her and managed to take it from her would be assailant. The thought sends shivers down my spine.
Now as far as baring arms lol, there are some that shouldn't be allowed that either!!
