This week we have a 4-day weekend in Madrid, and as per usual I have some cleaning projects planned. May 1st is Labour Day in Europe and a holiday for all of Spain while the 2nd is a holiday for Madrid only, which marks the bicentennial celebration of the uprising of the people of Madrid against Napleon. The local TV station is going to broadcast a series about it beginning tomorrow night. I'm not a TV addict, but I'm really excited about seeing this programme. This painting by Goya (copied from Wikipedia) is one that I always think of when I think of the 2nd of May though this particular painting depicts what happened on the 3rd. I've read that it was widely thought that Goya sympathized with the French. I do know that he died in France. Whatever. This is almost a photograph rather than a painting.

ReplyDeleteNot planning to do a lot of heavy stuff - have already done spring cleaning. I'm just going to wash the windows (if it doesn't rain) and clean out my collection of magazines because I have too many so they're going to the paper bank. Zara and I will take some nice strolls in one of our favourite parks.
