I know I'm not the most observant person in the world and have known this ever since my university days when my roommate Peggy would ask me what colour socks our hunk of a history professor had been wearing (I had class with him before she did). I never paid attention to things like socks and still don't unless they're wild and highly-visible. I do notice things like urban furniture and have been known to quote a few proverbs and sayings.
All too often the past couple of weeks, my street and the surrounding streets have been in total darkness, or they have been when I take my dog out around 10 pm. Okay, I know it's not particularly dark at this time of night, especially with the lights from the bars and restaurants.Nevertheless, I'm used to living in a very well-lit city where you can see who or what's there. Is the town council leaving us little streets without light in order to save money,I mean energy? Not only have we been left in the dark, but all of the rubbish bins in my area have suddenly disappeared. Again, I've always been able to find one when I needed it. This morning I had to walk almost to the main street for one. What plan is this? Is it, as many people's philosophy happens to be, I'm creating more jobs for street cleaners by throwing my litter in the street? What will they take away next?
Our famous 40th of May falls on this Wednesday. This is the day when you can officially put away your winter clothes. For the past couple of years, this hasn't been true, and this year I've been caught with my summer things still in storage. We've had summer weather since the middle of May. May 15th is a holiday in Madrid in honour of its patron saint, San Isidro, except this year it fell on a Saturday. San Isidro always brings us rain on this day. Well, he forgot to last year and this one too!
As my granny used to say, what's this world coming to when you can't find a bin for your waste or when the old sayings let you down? As a child, I always thought she was being old-fashioned. Now I ask myself the same question about all this and more. What's more, the weatherman has predicted a high of 20º C (68 º F) and a low of 12º C (52ºF) for Wednesday. I'll believe that when I feel it!
I would consider myself an observant person but I don’t pay attention to socks either lol. This is a great posting Brenda. I to find myself saying what is this world coming to. Your experience with trying to find a waste bin sounds so familiar to what happened to me a few weeks ago and I wouldn’t even have realized it if my cell phone didn’t die on me, maybe I’m not as observant as I thought lol. My battery died so I told the person I was talking to that I would call them right back, do you think I could find a public telephone, no! I remember a time they were everywhere. I guess someone thought everyone has cell phones so what’s the point. I was blown away by this.
ReplyDeleteHope you have nice weather on Wednesday, get out those summer clothes.
This is a bad state of affairs, when you cant find a place to put your rubbish, would they fine you if you just left it in the street?? We can now be fined if you have thrown a cigarette butt out of a car, so maybe there is some method in their madness??
ReplyDeleteWe had beautiful days friday and saturday and I burnt my arms yesterday even though I was only in the garden for 2 hours!! the rest of the week?? Rain!!
Well, I've seen they've put one bin back fairly near - not in my street though. However, there are still missing ones.
ReplyDeleteBrenda That sounds like they are full of rubbish, no pun intended. as I was reading about you & Zara walking deserted darkened streets Twilight came to mind . thoughts of Italy and they were running through cobblestone streets with vampires on their heels.. oh yeah they r vampires.. so warped my thoughts. Sorry hope u get a bin close by. making me realize people are cutting back every where.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind I stole ur quote there to the left yesterday for my quote box on tagged. It felt so wrong just taking it without asking so I am fessing up. I wouldn't come to your house and slip something in my pocket.
Now when i come for my espresso you will be keeping a eye on me....yikes
Our lights and bins are all present and correct here! Summer already arrived , phew!
ReplyDeleteGood post, Brenda! I am observant, but probably not about socks - unless they jump out at me! LOL I think we all eventually turn to sayings and superstitions from childhood... everything old is new again. The older we get, the more we realize how astute our parents/grandparents really were!
ReplyDeleteWell, I saw today that some of the rubbish bins have appeared (different models), but none in my street yet! Tonight we had street lights too!
