San Isidro is the male Patron Saint of Madrid. His feast day is celebrated on the 15th of May with typical popular gatherings such as romerías (local festive pilgrimages), verbenas (fairs) and bullfights. The most important bullfights in Spain (and thus the world) take place in Madrid's Plaza de Las Ventas bullring at this time. Lasting more than 20 days, this series of fights held in Spain's premiere bullring attracts the best fighters and breeders, together with the most knowledgeable aficionados. If you want to see a bullfight, this is the time to go. Click here for more information about bullfights in Madrid. Copied from www.gomadrid.com (I corrected a couple of spelling mistakes).
Today is a holiday for us in Madrid – a day which traditionally brings rain, but for the last couple of years Saint Isidro hasn’t blessed us with rain. It’s partly cloudy today, however, rain isn’t in the forecast. What is in the forecast, of course, in the bullring near my house, is, I believe, the eighth of the San Isidro bullfights. I can hear the people outside who will be attending. Any moment now there will be a monumental traffic jam and our usually quiet neighbourhood will be filled with shouts and horns blaring. Then we’ll have quiet again for a while. Perhaps we’ll hear the occasional olé if the crowd is pleased, and afterwards noise again as the people come out filling the bars and streets. Me, I’m staying in at least until all the ‘bulls’ are in the ring.
LOL I was just going to say go out and have a good day. But after reading what is going on, I would stay indoors today! Perhaps you have a window you can view what is going on? Preferably from a second story balcony! lol
ReplyDeleteWise choice my friend lol. Bullfights appear very interesting but I'm not so sure I would want to see one. Part of me would love to witness the spectacle and the grace of the fighter (for better lack of term) but the other part wouldn't want to see the bull tormented. Although I don't think the bull would care much about tormenting me lol. Enjoy your holiday and thanks for the cultural information.
ReplyDeleteI agree with diana, a second story balcony would be my ticket!
SOUNDS LIKE FUN! GOOD WATCH FRON UR BALCONEY. B SAFE . ANY TAPPAS? OH I AM ALWAYS THINKING OF FOOD..
ReplyDeleteFunny you should mention tapas. That's something I always miss whenever I'm out of Spain
ReplyDeleteAunt Brenda,
ReplyDeleteHI! Wow bullfights. That sounds like so much fun. They don't hurt the bulls do they? I saw on a movie once that they cut out the bulls heart and thats the closest i've ever been to a bull fight.

Yes, Kayleigh they do kill the bull unless the bull is considered to be extra brave. Then its life is pardoned and it lives the rest of its life in luxury. The click here link above explains bullfights fairly well. Anyway, the meat from the bull isn't wasted. There's a restaurant across from my house that has the monopoly on the tail part. I know it doesn't sound very appetizing but bull's tail stew is delicious, and I'm not a lover of beef. Hope you know I'm talking about the meat part of the tail. Kisses for the babies
